PURPOSE:To obtain a high-purity diamine in high yield while suppressing the formation of by-products by adding hydroxide of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal in the catalytic reduction-amination reaction of an aminophenyl alkyl ketone with hydrogen and ammonia. CONSTITUTION:Hydroxide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal is added in the catalytic reduction-amination reaction of an aminophenyl alkyl ketone of formula I (R is 1-5C alkyl; the substitution site of NH2 is o, m or p) (e.g. m-aminoacetophenone) with hydrogen and ammonia to obtain a diamine of formula II [e.g. alpha-(m-aminophenyl)ethylamine]. The aminophenyl alkyl ketone of formula I used as a starting substance can be produced by nitrating a phenyl alkyl ketone of formula III and catalytically reducing the nitro group of the resultant nitrophenyl alkyl ketone of formula IV. |
