PURPOSE:To uniformly deposit soot by always keeping the optimal exhaust flow volume without relating to the position of a burner and stabilizing the flow of air in a chamber, when the soot is deposited in the chamber, while the burner is transferred. CONSTITUTION:Glass fine particles from a traversed burner 21 are deposited on the periphery of a rotated target bar 12 in a chamber 11 to form soot 13. Many exhaust ports 31 are arranged in an array-like shape along the traverse direction of the burner 21 in the chamber 11, and practical exhaust gas flow volumes for the respective exhaust ports are measured. The position of the burner 21 is detected with a rotary encoder 26. The preliminarily determined optimal exhaust pattern data for the various positions of the burner are held, and a computer 41 controls the exhaust gas flow volumes of the respective exhaust ports 31 in response to the positions of the burner 31 and to the flow volume measured at each exhaust gas port 31 on the basis of the data. |
