PURPOSE: To improve fuel injection and combustion performances by forming a combustion chamber in a suction valve chamber as a funnel-shaped chamber diverging toward a cylinder and injecting fuel to the combustion chamber from an injection nozzle arranged at a funnel top. CONSTITUTION: An internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder block 1 and a cylinder 2 with a piston 3. A suction valve 5 and two discharge valves are oppositely disposed in a cylinder cover 4 in the cylinder 2. Fuel is directly injected at intervals from an injection nozzle 20 in a combustion chamber 18, and fresh air is supplied from the suction valve 5, thereby generating swirls. In this case, a funnel-shaped combustion chamber 18 diverging toward the piston 3 is arranged in the suction valve 5. The combustion chamber 18 is arranged in a plurality of air intake passages 16, 17 in the cylinder cover 4. The injection nozzle 20 is arranged in the region of a funnel top 19.
