PURPOSE:To obtain a member improved in durability while securing excellent lubricity and wear resistance by depositing thermally cracked carbon on the recesses of the fine unevennesses resulting from chemically etching the surface(s) produced by mechanically abrading sliding surfaces. CONSTITUTION:The sliding surfaces, facing each other, of a dense, wear-resistant sintered compact ceramic consisting mainly of an oxide (e.g. alumina) are mechanically abraded, and one or both of the resultant surfaces is chemically etched to produce fine unevennesses 21. Then, a gas of an organic compound such as benzine is introduced at 800-1200 deg.C onto the unevennesses 21 to deposit a noncrystalline thermally cracked carbon layer 22 0.01-2mum thick thereon along with intruding the thermally cracked carbon into the fine recesses of the unevennesses, thus obtaining the objective sliding member. For the etching, hydrofluoric acid is pref. used. For further improving the durability of the above member, it is recommended that the face of the thermally cracked carbon layer 22 be coated with an oily lubricant such as silicone grease. |
