A method for removing nitrogen present in ammonia comprises the following steps: ammonia is provided, for example by filtration of ammonia- containing gas or by bringing that gas into contact with water and removing the ammonia dissolved therein by heating. The ammonia is heated to a temperature at which the ammonia decomposes; the mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen thus obtained is admixed with a limited amount of oxygen, as a result of which the mixture obtained burns to form water vapour and nitrogen. According to the invention, use is made of the known fact that ammonia gas, if heated to a suitable temperature, can be decomposed into a mixture of three parts hydrogen and one part nitrogen.
