Prodn. of divinylbenzene (I) comprises distilling an oil contg. (I) obtd. by dehydrogenation of diethylbenzene (II) in presence of (i) an inhibitor of the polymerisation of nitrophenol and (ii) an inhibitor of the polymerisation of quinone or phenol. The inhibitor (i) for inhibition of the polymerisation of nitrophenol is pref. a dinitrophenol cpd., and esp. 2,4-dinitrophenol (IV). The inhibitor (ii) for inhibition of the polymerisation of phenol is pref. t.-butyl catechol (V). Pref. amt. of inhibitors (i) and (ii) in the oil contg. (I) is at least 0.1 wt.%, pref. at least 0.2 wt.% and esp. 0.5-5 wt.%, and the content of the inhibitors in the refluxing oil is at least 0.01 wt.%, pref. 0.01-0.5 wt.%. An oxygen-contg. gas e.g. air may be introduced into the lower part of the distn. column to reinforce the action of the polymerisation inhibitors, esp. where the gas is introduced in an amt. giving 20-100 ppm O2 gas w.r.t. the oil contg. (I). ADVANTAGE - Incorporating a combination of inhibitors (i) and (ii) during the distn. of oils obtd. by catalytic vapour phase dehydrogenation of (II) and pref. consisting predominantly of (I), ethylvinylbenzene (III) and (II), gives good inhibition of polymerisation of (I) during the distn., allows good elimination of impurities which are heaver than (I), and provide a distn. residue which is easy to handle. |
