In the continuous gravitational or centrifugal sepn. of a pure or solids-contg. liq.-liq. emulsion into its individual components, the novelty is that the emulsion is fed through a liq. jet pump, in which it is intimately mixed with a propulsive stream supplied under pressure to the nozzle in the pump, prior to gravity or centrifugal sepn. of its phases. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for sepn. of oil sludge from the petroleum processing industry, from storage tanks and from locations in which petroleum or petroleum products (e.g, diesel or heating oil) remains stationary for long periods. The jet pump treatment promotes emulsion breaking in a simple manner to allow recovery of hydrocarbons in a form suitable for processing in refineries to obtain fuels and other refinery products. The process is also suitable for low energy cost treatment of very old oil sludges.
