The darkening device uses a nematic liquid crystal layer, controlled by an applied voltage to regulate the quantity of light transmitted. Pref. the voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer is controlled via an auxiliary light sensor circuit, for monitoring the amount light level. The voltage is applied across transparent electrode coatings on opposite sides of the liquid crystal layer inserted in front of a rear view mirror, spectacle lens, viewer lens or light source.
