A vertically operated roller-door mechanism is driven by an electrical motor that is controlled to provide smooth stopping at a required end point. The actual position of the roller door is determined by pulses generated by a device coupled to the drive. The door position is related to a defined given position (R) and the top (O) and bottom (U) positions can be selected. An intermediate position (Z) can also be specified if required. Additional regions (O',U',Z') are determined that depend upon the speed of roller door operation and define the start of control braking to achieve a smooth stopping action.
