A process to lay an end of yarn in a splicer or knotter on a winding machine, when connection between supply cop and wound cone is absent, and so that the reconnection can be made. The yarn end from the cop and from the cone is laid in the splicer by the single arrangement. The appts used is also claimed. Typically, the single arrangement is a suction tube (25) which swivels at (26), having an open end (27) with a sensor (32) inside, to detect yarn presence. The tube can reach at the lower position, to place the yarn end (6a) from the cop (5) into the splicer (10), in such a manner that the yarn is held in the grip (11), while an upper yarn end (6b) is drawn from the cone (15). This is achieved when the tube (25) rises (28) to meet the end (31) of the yarn guide (29). The flat shape of the guide is so formed to draw the yarn end away from the winding on the cone (15). ADVANTAGE - The arrangement is compact and efficient.
