The water meter has main and fine meters and an automatic changeover valve operated by differential press. and spring press. A switching insert (7) carrier (13) has an annular chamber (15) which accepts the front part of a blocking device (9) edge when the valve is closed. A narrow annular gap allows secondary flow into the insert. The main flow path (22) of the switching insert contains a constricting inlet hopper (23) and a very narrow and short seal seat passage (24). The blocking device has an elastic seal, e.g. an o-ring or lip seal (27), on its front. The lip seal is rigidly attached to the blocking element at its outer section.
