For preparing barrier layers on the surfaces of thermoplastic plastics, the surfaces are treated with gas, containing fluorine. The barrier layers are effective against mixtures of polar and unpolar agents, for example fuels, containing methanol. In order to improve the barrier effect, the treating gas is cooled, so and thus the surface is treated with it, whose temperature by the moment of starting the treatment is kept at 60 to 2500C.
