A method of joining a pair of members (4, 5) comprises causing relative movement between a consumable friction member (1) and the members (4, 5) to be joined, whereby material from the consumable member is laid down onto adjacent upper surfaces of the members to be joined so that the members are joined via the laid down material. The region (6) between the members to be joined presents a substantially flat surface to the consumable member.
