For the purpose of coupling a first digital bus (7) and a second bus (6) of any type, the device according to the invention groups together the specific electrical and logic characteristics of the second bus (6) within a plug-in module (3) which will be linked up to a coupling card (1) producing a connection with the first bus (7), the coupling card comprising a programmable interface (2) programmed when being initialised with information stored in a memory (4) forming part of the plug-in module. The invention applies in particular to the connection of a data processing unit to a multiplicity of external members whose linking buses are not compatible. <IMAGE>
