A receiver unit, for example in a domestic installation, runs an application program (21) which listens out for messages possibly originating from a communication space to which this unit is linked. In the event of reception of a message, tests (31, 37, 39) determine the value of an addressing mode code (MA). Depending on the value of this code, a selection is made of the components (AU-T, AR-T) of the address of the message received, on which the search is carried out for agreement with corresponding components (AU-L, AR-L) of the address of the receiving unit.
