To produce a foil-wrapped strand of straw or grass bales, it is known to pass the bales through a rotating ring 12 which supports one or more storage reels 18 for foil 26. During passage through the ring, the bales must be free to allow wrapping in the lower area, which has hitherto been achieved by difficult axial clamping of the bale. In the invention, use is made of an actual support in the form of lower support spikes 22 which extend rearwards from the front end of the wrapping area, so that the foil can be wrapped under these spikes and then drawn off unimpeded rearwards from there. It is thus possible to use a simple feed conveyor 16 for advancing the bales, and it is further proposed to use, instead of a fixed wrapping ring 12, a circular support band for the foil reels, which band can be advanced between positionally adjustable deflection rollers 30 for adapting to bales having different cross-sectional shapes. <IMAGE>
