FAILED FUEL ROD DETECTION USING THE ACOUSTIC RESONANCE PHENOMENON

The method and apparatus is for determining the nuclear fuel rod regardless of whether it is damaged or not by using the wave resonant effect. The resonant frequency of the ultrasonic wave propagating through the inside of the coating tube is determined by the material, width, and the ratio of outer and inner diameters of the coating tube. The apparatus comprises an ultrasonic wave signal processor including a transmitting probe (1), a receiving probe (2), a pulse generator (3), a receiving signal amplifier (4), a digital osciloscope (5), and a computer system analysing and storing the test results; and a probe driver including a manipulator (8) determining the relative position of the probe against the fuel rod, and a remote controller (9) controlling the manipulator.
