PURPOSE:To provide a high reliability SOFC free from breakage of a unit cell resulting from thermal reaction by making uniform the power generating reaction in the unit cell, and thereby making uniform the density of the current in the plane and suppression of the temp. distribution over the cell surface. CONSTITUTION:A solid electrolyte type fuel cell (SOFC) is composed of a solid electrolyte, air electrode, and fuel electrode, and at least in either of the electrodes, the electrode area on the gas inlet side is made smaller than the gas outlet side. Because of the decreased electrode area in the neighborhood of the gas inlet, the amount of power generation in this part decreases, which leads to the reduction of the current density. Therein the reaction amount is suppressed in the neighborhood of the gas inlet, so that the gas concentration difference between the gas inlet and outlet, and it is practicable to make uniform the power generating reaction till near the gas outlet. Accordingly the current density over the whole cell surface can be made uniform without changing the sum of the power generation amount in the plane. This makes uniform the temp. over the cell surface and allows effective prevention of cell breakage due to thermal stress. |
