PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display device which is improved in the dependency of a contrast and display colors on visual angles (hereafter described as visual angle characteristic) and can exactly display intermedium contrasts regardless of the visual angles. CONSTITUTION:A polarizer 102 and an analyzer 103 are respectively disposed on the light incident side of a liquid crystal cell 101 of a TN type by holding this liquid crystal cell therebetween and a biaxial phase plate 104 is disposed between the liquid crystal cell 101 and the analyzer 103. This biaxial phase plate 104 is so disposed as to be parallel with the incident side orientation treatment direction 107a of the liquid crystal cell 101. The transmission axis 102a of the polarizer 102 is intersected orthogonally with the incident side orientation treatment direction 107a and the transmission axis 103a of the analyzer 103 is intersected orthogonally with the transmission axis 102a. The refractive indices nx, ny, yz of the three directions of the biaxial phase plate 104 satisfy ny<nz<nx. |
