PURPOSE:To suppress SOx poisoning of NOx absorbing/cracking catalyst, and aim at regeneration from SOx poisoning. CONSTITUTION:In an exhaust gas purifying device provided with the NOx absorbing member 6 of alkaline earth metal oxide and the like in the exhaust passage 4 of a lean combustible internal combustion engine, an air fuel ratio is made in a strike or rich condition intermittently or continuously when the air fuel ratio is in lean condition, and exhaust gas is at a high temperature (for example 550 deg.C) or when the absorbing member 6 is at a high temperature.
