A spray-dried fluid cracking catalyst contains synthetic silica-alumina-magnesia and in intimate association therewith 10-70% based or dry catalyst weight of a finely-divided inorganic siliceous additive material, the catalyst containing 10-30% synthetic alumina and 1,5-15% magnesia, the alumina-magnesia weight ratio being 1:1 to 8:1; the catalyst is prepared by a process comprising reacting a silica-alumina gel with finely-divided magnesium oxide at 30 DEG -75 DEG C. for at least 0,5 hours. Specified additive materials are silica flow, fullers earth and kaolin which may be calcined and acid treated.
