Polymers based on repeating units of formula (I) are claimed, and also copolymers thereof based on 1-3 units A, B and C derived from monomers of formula (II), mono- or di-maleates or fumarates, styrene, styrene derivs., vinyl halides, alkenes, vinyl esters or vinyl ethers, contg. at least 30 mole % units (I) and up to 70 mole % monomers A, B, C. In the formulae R1-R6 is H or opt. substd. 1-8C alkyl; D is 1-6C alkylene, 5-10C cycloalkylene or 6-12C arylene; R7 is OR8 or NR9R10; R8, R9 is H, opt. substd. 1-8C alkyl or -(CH2)m-Y; R10 is H, opt. substd. 1-8C alkyl or a gp. of formula E or F; E is -COO-X1-OCO-NR11-X2-NR11-(COO-X1-OCO-NR11-X2-NR11)nR12; F is -CONR11X1NR11CONR11X2NR11-(CONR11X1NR11CONR11X2NR11)pR12; R11, R12 is as for R1, R2; X1, X2 is 1-8C alkylene, 6-12C cycloalkylene, arylene, aryl-(1-8C alkylene), (1-8C alkyl)-arylene, xylylene or opt. substd. polyether or polyester residue; Y is -P(O)(OR1)(OR2) or -OZ; Z is H, 1-8C alkyl, aryl, aryl-(1-8C alkyl), (1-8C alkyl)aryl or -P(OR1)(OR2) or -P(O)(OR1)(OR2); m is 1-4; and n, p is 0-3. Also claimed are (1) a process for the prodn. of these (co)polymers, by radical soln. polymerisation or pptn. polymerisation of the corresp. monomer(s); and (2) fire retardant additives contg. the above polymer(s), opt. together with conventional diluents and additives. Pref. the (co)polymers contain 40-99 mole % units (I) and 1-60 mole % units, A, B, C, which are pref. derived from (meth)acrylamide or N-methyl-, N,N-dimethyl-, N-methylol-, N-methoxymethyl-, N-ethoxymethyl-, N-propoxymethyl- or N-butoxymethyl-(meth)acrylamide, or methyl or ethyl (meth)acrylate, dimethyl maleate or fumarate, styrene, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, ethylene, propylene, vinyl acetate, vinyl ethyl ether, glycidyl (meth)acrylate, or beta-hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl (meth)acrylate. R1 = R2 = Me, D = -CH2-, R4 = H or Me; R5 = R6 = H. The (co)polymers have mol. wt. 1500-1 million, pref. 5000-100,000. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used as fire retardant finishes for woven textiles and polyacrylonitrile fibres, and as binders for printing textiles (claimed). The invention provides transparent, halogen-free fire retardants which give a better fire-resistant finish to textiles and can also be used as self-extinguishing textile printing binders.
