In a process for stretching leather, a piece of leather to be stretched is continuously gripped and clamped over its width during its transport through a processing section by individual opposite holding members moved in the transport direction. While the piece of leather is further transported, the distance between two holding members arranged side by side is increased at least until the desired final width of the piece of leather is reached, and then the completely stretched piece of leather is released. The clamping force between the holding members is adjustable and is preferably supplied by pneumatic means. A device for carrying out this process has un upper chain arrangement (14) and a lower chain arrangement (12) which extend together along a processing section (19), are urged against each other by elastic transport belts (13 and 15), and have at their surface holding members with leather gripping surfaces which when adjacent endless chains are (24 or 33) divergently guided stretch the piece of leather in the desired manner without requiring manual clamping. This design with transport belts allows a continuous and gentle processing operation to be obtained.
