Collision prevention system for vehicles - uses distance sensing arrangement with ultrasound transmitter mounted on front face of vehicle.

The vehicle safety system includes a distance sensor, for determining distance to a vehicle travelling ahead, and a program-controlled computer (1). The distance sensor includes an ultrasound transmitter (2) mounted on the front face of the vehicle and functioning at a frequency above 20 kHz, above the audible frequency range. The sensor functions according to an echo-time principle, whereby the ultrasound waves when confronted with an obstacle, are reflected back off the obstacle and reach the distance sensor after a time delay proportional to the obstacle's distance i.e. the vehicle travelling ahead. The computer differentiates the sensors reading over time and activates a warning device (5) or brakes the vehicle if a collision is otherwise unavoidable. The sensor detects objects within a 30 deg. beam angle. ADVANTAGE - Reliably and safely avoids motoring incidents without incurring high cost of radar based systems.
