The illumination device comprises a light chamber (11) with a light dispersal disc (1) on one side acting as the light output surface of the liquid crystal display cell, providing controlled light of at least two different colours. The light is supplied to the light chamber via openings which are selectively opened or closed via liquid crystal light valves (8,9,10). The light valves may act as switched colour filters for white light and be provided by ferroelectric liquid crystal cells. ADVANTAGE - Rapid changing between different light colours, to provide colour image.
