An electric load (5) can be connected to a voltage supply (6) via relay contacts (2a). Control electronics (1) control the relay (2). A current sensor (3) and melting protection fuse (4) are provided in the load current loop. When an over-heated load current is detected, the control electronics (1) leaves the relay (2) switched on until the melt protection switch (4) has been triggered. Switching measures are provided to guarantee especially good contact of the relay contacts (2a) when the load current exceeds a given safe threshold. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for use in motor vehicles.
