A transport refrigeration system (18,36) having separate evaporator (20,38) and condenser (22) units, with the condenser unit being mountable in either a vertical or a horizontal orientation. The condenser unit includes a frame (60) supporting a condenser coil (44), a compressor (64) and a refrigerant receiver (46). The compressor is a dry sump compressor having a predetermined centerline (170), with the compressor being operable with said predetermined centerline in any orientation within 45 DEG of a vertical centerline (174) through the compressor. The compressor is oriented on the frame such that when the frame is oriented for vertical mounting the predetermined centerline of the compressor defines a first angle (172) of about 45 DEG with the vertical centerline, and when the frame is oriented for horizontal mounting the predetermined centerline of the compressor defines a second angle (176) of about 45 DEG with the vertical centerline, with the first and second angles being on opposite sides of the vertical centerline.
