PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of the penetration, flash and restraining breakout of a molten steel by providing a projecting part to each of belt coolers in the transverse direction of belts and providing a recess to the surface of a stationary short side in contact with the belts in the part corresponding to the above-mentioned projecting part. CONSTITUTION:The projecting part having a step Y is provided to the belt 2 coolers (cooling pads) 7 at each of the ends in the transverse direction of the belts 2 and the surface of the stationary short side 1 in contact with the belts 2 is recessed from the belt 2 surface by Z in part of the side face of the short side 1 to decrease the friction resistance. The pressure of the water film 8 at the ends of the pads 7 is increased by maintaining the thickness, as designated W, of the water film 8 enough to cool the belts 2 at W<=Y<=W+Z, by which the belts 2 are mechanically pressed to the short side 1 and a clearance X is minimized. The traces of the molten metal penetration at the corners of an ingot 5 are decreased and the breakout is eventually decreased by such constitution. The stable operation is thus made possible. |
