In order to reduce insertion loss and to solve the problem of reflection associated with use of a coupler, an optical switch 16, 18 is used to selectively connect an optical transmitter 20, 24 or an optical receiver 22, 26 to an optical fiber 10 or a passive optical network (PON) (56, fig 4) in a time compression multiplexing (TCM) system or a time division multiple access (TDMA) system.
