[Also in Division B7 and F3] In a propulsion unit for a recoverable space vehicle one or more non-nuclear liquid fuel motors are combined with at least one thermonuclear powered motor, there being a common propellent component and feed system and it being possible to operate the motors individually or all together. The propulsion unit comprises a thermo-nuclear powered motor 10 with a reactor 11 and a nozzle 12, and four non- nuclear liquid-fuel motors 15, 20, 25, 30, mounted adjacent one another and symmetrical with respect to the thermonuclear motor 10, and having combustion chambers 16, 21, 26, 31 and nozzles 17, 22, 27, 32, the motors 15, 30 being pivotally mounted about axes 35, 36. Storage tanks 3, 4 for the oxidizing agent are connected by pipework to each other and to the liquid-fuel motors 15, 20, 25, 30, while a storage tank 5 for the propellant connects with both the liquid-fuel and nuclear motors. Disposed in the pipework are regulating devices 14, while a shield 13 screens the thermonuclear motor. In operation the non-nuclear motors are ignited to accelerate the vehicle to a height at where it is safe to operate the thermonuclear motor, after which the non-nuclear motors are only used as required to augment the thermo-nuclear motor or to control the position and trajectory of the vehicle. The thermonuclear motor may also be pivotally mounted. |
