Alternating current power line insulator with a protective spark arrester formed from two horns fixed by means of adjustable supports in such a way that the spacing between these horns is well defined, characterised by the fact that between the end (13) of the said insulator (1) intended to be connected to earth and the support for the corresponding horn (7) is interposed a composite follow-current interrupting device (20) comprising, between two metal end-fittings (23, 24), at least one thyristor, the assembly being provided with a casing and a synthetic covering.
