PURPOSE:To provide the method for producing the optical fiber preform, capable of producing the optical fiber matrix extremely reduced in its eccentricity without breaking the matrix in the stage of its porous molding. CONSTITUTION:The method for producing an optical fiber preform comprises the steps of installing a clad material on the outside of a core material to produce a porous molded product, the clad material being formed by coating the powder of quarts; arranging the axial direction of the porous molding in a substantially vertical direction and subsequently slicing the outer periphery of the porous molded material to correct the eccentricity of the clad material; and defatting and converting the eccentricity-corrected porous molding into a transparent glass.
