The invention relates to flat polyethylene terephthalate materials with a low surface roughness consisting of dendritic, plateau-like structures with a fissured, fractal-like edge, a process for the production thereof by irradiating the surfaces with UV radiation generated by the decay of excimers and the use of polyethylene terephthalate films treated in this manner as a substrate material for thin ferromagnetic metal layers.
