Novel processes, intermediates and reagents for the preparation of 3-substituted furanose or furanoside compounds of Formula I: (* CHEMICAL STRUCTURE *) FORMULA I wherein M is hydrogen or alkyl (C1-C3), A is halogen or A may be selected from a moiety of the formula: OR, SR, N3, SCR, OC-R or CN wherein R is hydrogen, branched or unbranched alkyl (C1-C4) or phenyl which compounds have antiviral and other biological activity.
