A process for treating a fibrous and/or porous material is disclosed. The process comprises treating the material with a curable polymer solution, usually an aqueous solution, curing the polymer and drying the material. The dried material is then irradiated with microwaves and the heat emission due to residual humidity is detected, for example with the aid of a temperature measuring device. The heat-emitting part of material is separated, usually by a sorting device controlled by the temperature measuring device, and subjected to additional drying. The process is applicable to a wide range of materials, such as rock wool, glass wool, ceramic fibres, textile-type materials and mixtures thereof. It is particularly useful for manufacturing materials which should be free of residual humidity, such as materials used in the building industry.
