PURPOSE: To provide an improved method and an apparatus for treating a mixture of air and steam contaminated with sulfur generated at the time when granules are produced from blast furnace slag. CONSTITUTION: The contaminated mixture is introduced into an upward stream 9 to form a downward stream 23 in a vessel 34 kept in a reduced pressure state. An alkaline aqueous solution is sprayed as a parallel stream to the stream 23. A purified and uncondensed gas is removed from the vessel through a stream forced and feely regulated by inducing and maintaining a reduced pressure on the inside.
