An infant restraint device has a generally rigid shell assembly for receiving an infant, the shell assembly having a lower shell portion and an upper shell portion. The lower shell portion is pivotally coupled to the upper shell portion to permit the shell assembly to be alternately positioned in a substantially planar configuration and in an angled configuration. The coupling means comprises locking means for selectively locking the shell assembly in either the planar configuration or the angled configuration. The lower shell portion includes a base portion to support the device on a vehicle seat.
