A heavy road vehicle or aircraft is provided with an emergency brake consisting of a pair of flexible mats 23, one on each side of the vehicle, for engagement between the rear wheels 13 and the road surface, each mat being anchored to the vehicle by a chain or chains 24 and being normally contained in a pivoted tray 11 adapted to be held in an elevated position by latch means 46 which are releasable to cause the tray to pivot downwardly to the position shown, thus releasing the mat so that it slides outwardly and downwardly to contact the ground just in front of the relevant wheel. Each tray is pivoted on a rod 34 (see Figs. 1 and 4, not shown), which is welded to a bracket 33 on the vehicle chassis, a brace 36 being welded between the bracket 33 and the outer end of the rod. A bar 52 limits downward pivoting of the tray at the desired angle. A hinged flap 41 on the tray normally retains the mat and engages under a flange 40 on a cover-plate 39 welded to the bracket 33. The chains 24, or a single chain (Fig. 7, not shown), are attached to rod 34 by a clip and to the mat by being clamped in a groove 58 provided in the forward end of a flexible steel reinforcing member 59 of the mat. The member 59 has a coating 60, which may be of different material on its two faces so as to provide less friction on its upper side. The coating on the lower face is preferably provided with longitudinal grooves. The latch means 46 is hand-operated from the driver's cab via a flexible cable.</p> |
