A carton setting-up apparatus comprises a die 4 with plunger 5 arranged to remain stationary in the die 4 for a predetermined interval and a transfer device 2 with suction pads 3 to transfer blanks B from a magazine 1 to the die 4, the transfer device 2 having heaters 6 to preheat a thermoplastic adhesive on the blank B prior to its movement from the magazine 1 while the plunger 5 rests in the die 4. Plunger 5 is moved by an operating rod 18 connected to a stub shaft 23 on a link 21 which is pivoted at 22 to a disc 19 a dwell portion 26 constituting a lost motion device in the cam 25. This determines the interval during which the plunger 5 remains in the die 4. The bell crank 15 and the connecting arms 7 are arranged so that as the plunger 5 rises, the transfer device 2 moves into a position to place the blank B over the die 4. Arm 9a Fig. 2 (not shown) may be used in place of bell crank 15. To avoid overheating of a blank B in the magazine when the machine is stopped the apparatus is arranged so that the transfer device 2 will always, be arrested mid-way between the magazine 1 and the die 4. The heating means is movable with the transfer device. According to the Provisional Specification the connecting rod 18 is operated by a crank through a lost motion device comprising spring means.
