PURPOSE:To enable an inverter element to be protected via the interruption of the operation of an inverter, upon occurrence of an error in starting a lamp, by keeping a starting switch on for a constant time necessary for the lamp to start with a timer, and actuating a starter circuit for lighting the lamp. CONSTITUTION:When this device is actuated, a control circuit 8 causes a timer circuit 20 to begin counting and concurrently turns on a start switch 15. As a result, a starter circuit 14 applies starting high voltage to a glow tube 13a. Thereafter, when the circuit 20 counts a constant time necessary for the start of a lamp, the switch 15 is turned off to stop the operation of the circuit 14, and a lamp body 13 transits from glow discharge state to arc discharge state. Thus, lighting takes place due to the operation of a lighting coil 12. In this case, when the circuit 8 judges that the start of the lamp is abnormal on the basis of the phase of output current detected with a phase comparator 19, a power interruption switch 3 is turned off, thereby interrupting high frequency power from an inverter section 4. Consequently, power consumption is reduced, and switching elements 5 and 6 are protected. |
