METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR VECTOR ENCODING OF VIDEO CONVERSION FACTOR

PURPOSE: To provide a method and a device for encoding a video conversion coefficient which makes it possible to mass-produce simple and reliable decoder equipment at a reasonable price and addresses information for processing a digital video signal for transmission in a compressed form. CONSTITUTION: One vector is generated from a block of a conversion coefficient to be sent in a prescribed category for discriminating a set of the coefficients. Only coefficients having amplitudes other than zero are transmitted. The vector is encoded in order to provide a vector code word for transmission. The coefficients from the set to be transmitted are inputted to a quantizer 88 and a variable-length encoder 90 and encoded in order to provide the coefficient code word for transmission. The vector code word relates the coefficient code word to a coefficient array in the block. In a suitable example, the block is divided into lots of areas including subsets of the coefficients. The individual vectors are transmitted to the respective areas while relating the coefficient arrays and the coefficient code words in the area where the blocks correspond to.
