The present invention relates to heat transfer from waste water from an estate to fresh water for the estate. The waste water is directed to a sewage pipe 2 in such a way that it is forced to flow downwards in the pipe along its outer wall. Heat from the waste water is transferred to a flowing heat transfer medium circulated on the outside of the pipe, which in turn delivers heat to the fresh water in a heat exchanger 6.
