PURPOSE:To provide an optical fiber amplifier of low polarization dispersion which enables ultrahigh speed communication over very long-distance. CONSTITUTION:The optical fibers 11a, 11b are Er-doped fiber in the same structure and length. These optical fibers 11a, 11b mutually compensating the polarization dispersion characteristics are fusion-connected in the relatively 90 deg. rotated state with respective optical axes of the optical fibers 11a, 11b aligned with each other. Accordingly, the potential difference in the polarization mode made in the amplifying step in the optical fiber 11a is offset by the optical fiber 11b to almost nullify the total polarization dispersion of respective optical fibers 11a, 11b. Through these procedures, the polarization dispersion of the title optical fiber amplifier as a whole can be minimized. |
