Polymers are prepared by reacting (1) a compound containing one or more aromatic nuclei with (2) a compound other than (1) and having the general formula (I)R1[-(CH2OR)]2 wherein R is an alkyl radical containing less than 5 carbon atoms and R1 is a divalent substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonoxy radical. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts type catalyst such as ferric chloride, zinc chloride and preferably stannic chloride. Compounds containing aromatic nuclei which may be employed are diphenyl, naphthalene, anthracene, terphenyl, diphenyl ether, dibenzyl ether, diphenylamino, organopolysiloxanes containing a phenyl radical attached to one or more silicon atoms, e.g. octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane, organosilicon polymers in which at least some of the polymer units are silarylene units and triphenylphosphate. Preferred compounds (2) are p-xylyleneglycol dialkyl ethers. The reaction may be carried out in two stages, by first forming a substantially linear polymer using equimolar proportions of the reactants and then adding additional compound (2) to cross-link the initially formed polymer. The reaction may be terminated after the first stage by adding a solvent.ALSO:Substrates may be coated with a resin prepared by reacting (1) a compound containing one or more aromatic nuclei with (2) a compound other than (1) of the formula: <FORM:1099123/B1-B2/1> wherein R is an alkyl radical containing less than 5 carbon atoms and R1 is a divalent, substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonxy radical. Examples describe the coating onto glass-cloth of (c) a resin prepared from diphenyl and p-xylyleneglycol dimethylether and (b) a resin prepared from triphenylphosphate, diphenyl ether and p-xylylene-clycol dimethylether and onto mild steel panels of (c) a composition comprising a polymer derived from diphenyl ether and p-xylyleneglycol dimethyl ether, titanium dioxide and xylene.
|
