Firmness control device (10) for a padded article (1) characterized in that at least some of the resiliently deformable means (5) are of a type which, under the effect of a localized mechanical stress at least in a plane largely parallel to the active surface (2) of the padded article (1), undergo alteration of their resilient property in the direction of application of a force (4). The device (10) is also characterized in that a plurality of adjustable means (11) apply, to at least some of the resiliently deformable means (5), at least two opposing actions capable of generating the above-mentioned stress.
