The safety circuit, as in P4127421, has an actual and/or required parameter value subjected to a test oscillation with a monitoring comparator used to verify the function of all components of the safety circuit, which operates an automatic shutter upon failure. The self-testing oscillation is provided via the laser beam using a deflection system in the beam path, under control of a piezoelectric sensor element. Thus, in a laser operating tool with a laser scalpel, the laser can be automatically switched off when the scalpel strays from the operating field it has learnt to be safe.
