The present invention includes a sensing edge (16) for controlling movement of a door (14) by actuation of a device upon force being applied to the sensing edge. The sensing edge includes a base member (20) for being secured to the leading edge (18) of a door and a sheath (36) having a plurality of internal cavities (58, 80) extending therethrough for receiving a switch comprising two electrical contacts (98, 104). The sensing edge assists in providing a failsafe feature for detecting electrical problems (such as open circuits) in the electrical contacts. In one embodiment the failsafe feature is achieved using an electrical connector (111, 112, 122, 124), positioned within the sheath, which electrically connects the electrical contacts. A method of making the sensing edge includes coextrusion of the base member and sheath, and, positioning electrical contacts within and bonded to the sheath and positioning electrical wiring within one or more sheath cavities during the coextrusion process. |
