The invention relates to a process for the economic reclamation and environment-friendly utilisation of waste materials such as refuse, sewage sludge, agricultural wastes and the like. Dry waste materials are comminuted to pellet size, mixed with quicklime and/or other reagents and with moist waste materials such as, for example, sewage sludge and subsequently pressed to form briquettes. In this process the dry materials need only be comminuted to pellet-size. Combustion of the briquettes thus produced provides utilisable energy as a substitute for fossil energy carriers and thus a useful and environment-friendly reclamation of waste materials which otherwise can only be reclaimed with great difficulty if at all and therefore have to be deposited on landfill sites.
