A safety device (10) for various types of ammunition, where the ammunition has a rotationally mounted target detector. The safety device (10) has a spray drive member (24) mounted to set off a detonator (38). The detonator (38) is moved by the spin of the ammunition, from a position radially outwards from the spin axis inward, hence changing from the safe to the armed position. The drive member (24), is coupled with a cocking slide (14) and a detonator slide (16) in order to produce a certain rotational acceleration or delay. The arming of the ammunition is achieved on attainment of a certain rotational time delay. This causes the cocking slide to move into forward armed positions. USE/ADVANTAGE - The design is particularly useful for air-dropped mines. The safety device can be installed in munitions without altering their outer dimensions. As the ammunition is armed by rotational acceleration and not by firing acceleration, it is possible to test the safety device while the munition is in flight.
