A laser-optical fiber tuning and control system which optimizes coupling of a laser output into an optical fiber (23) by minimizing the amount of light scattered into the fiber cladding (39), which provides a real-time indication of whether the radiation reaches the output end of the fiber (26) to an emergency shut-down switch, and which provides a communications system (41), (42) for control (43) of the laser (21) from the output end of the optical fiber (26).
